A History of Serving the Community
Vermillion area citizens who were committed to meeting their community’s need for a modern hospital founded the Dakota Hospital Association in 1930. They did this by forming a non-profit corporation, which could receive the charitable gifts of individual residents who became members of the Association. This Association used the gifts to acquire land and build a new hospital. Gifts were also received from the City of Vermillion and other organizations because they too saw their community’s need for new health care facilities.
As a result of this charitable support, the original 50-bed Dakota Hospital was able to be constructed in 1935 with additions and improvements made in 1961. In 1950, the Dakota Hospital Association built a nursing home for the community and expanded it to 66-beds in 1975.
A Vital Healthcare Partnership
A new and vital local healthcare partnership was established in 1989 when the Dakota Hospital Association began a lease agreement with Sanford Health of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The lease agreement combines the management and clinical resources of Sanford with the facilities and other assets of the Dakota Hospital Association to make the best healthcare possible available locally.
This concept of being “Better Together for Quality Healthcare” made possible by the lease agreement has lead to a revitalization of Vermillion’s own local healthcare services and medical campus as part of a comprehensive system of care for all area residents.
In 1993, Foundation funds, city sales tax support and bond financing made it possible to construct a new full-service hospital. “Old” Dakota Hospital is now used by USD Health Science Programs. The new hospital is a 25-bed full-service facility providing medical, surgical, obstetrical, and pediatric care and 24-hour emergency services along with a full range of diagnostic services. In 1994, a hospital-attached clinic was added. In 1997, a new nursing home, a 23-unit senior living apartment complex and additional clinic facilities were added to the campus. At that time, all of the debt of Dakota Hospital Association was refinanced at more favorable rates through a special financing guarantee by Sanford.
Today, a complete, modern medical center is available in Vermillion to serve our community. These facilities make it possible for dedicated physicians, nurses, technicians, and other staff to provide care for the whole family right here at home.
The Dakota Hospital Foundation
The Dakota Hospital Foundation (formerly named Dakota Hospital Association) owns and is responsible for the mortgage and maintenance of the facilities located on the Vermillion Medical Campus. Through provisions in the lease, Sanford funds these basic facility costs. Accordingly, the Dakota Hospital Foundation can expand its mission and further improve the community’s health facilities, services, and programs. The Association has added Foundation to their name to represent their revitalized charitable endeavors.
The Dakota Hospital Foundation is once again asking community members and organizations to get involved in supporting its important health care mission. As outlined in the information below, your charitable gifts take many forms. All donated funds will be under the exclusive control of the Dakota Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and will be used to support health care improvements for Vermillion area residents.
Charitable Gifts
There are many ways to help fulfill Dakota Hospital Foundation’s dedication to quality healthcare. Donors may designate their gift for the specific purpose they desire or make an unrestricted gift to be used where the need is greatest.
Gifts To Remember
The Gifts To Remember Program allows you to recognize the memories of special people or honor friends and loved ones at special times. You can use the Gifts To Remember Program to celebrate the life of family members and friends. You can also use the Gifts To Remember Program to mark special occasions as often as you choose to salute birthdays, wedding anniversaries, graduations, and new babies. You may wish to convey holiday wishes or give thanks for recovery from an illness.
Annual Gifts
Each year the Dakota Hospital Foundation Board of Directors will select special projects to improve the community’s health. Unrestricted Annual Contributions will make it possible to expand funding of these important Community Health Service projects.
The Community Health Projects will serve the health needs of area residents through the acquisition of specialized equipment, facility improvements or needed community health education and service programs. Donors wishing to have their Annual Gift support a particular program or service may so designate it to be used for that purpose.
Planned Gifts
Planned gifts are generally made through some form of bequest: estate plan, insurance policy transfer, or gift of stock or property. Often, these gifts provide an opportunity for individuals and families to make larger gifts than they might have thought possible while receiving favorable tax benefits and life income arrangements.
A properly drafted and up to date Will allows you to provide for loved ones and those charities you wish to support. Another benefit may be tax savings. If you wish to consider a bequest to the Dakota Hospital Foundation, we will assist you and your legal advisor.
Other forms of planned giving include various Trusts and Annuities. They allow the transfer of assets such as cash, property or equities to a charitable organization like Dakota Hospital Foundation. In return the donor can receive tax savings and annual income as determined by the gift and donor’s age or designated beneficiary arrangements.
Donor Endowed Funds
Donors may establish a permanent endowment fund with their gift to meet a special purpose or support a healthcare program important to them. The investment earnings of endowed funds are used for the purposes so designated by the donor. An agreement with the donor is established to ensure their wishes are carried out on an ongoing basis.
